Born in Melbourne, Australia, Billie Cole is the eldest of four sisters and grew up in a home where music was ever-present. Her father, a former saxophone and clarinet player in local swing bands, set aside his musical career to support the family, but continued to fill their home with the sounds of classic jazz, big band swing, R&B, soul, and iconic female vocalists from around the world. From an early age, Billie developed a passion for music, learning to sing, play piano, and guitar.
Family road trips along the Australian coast became the backdrop for Billie and her sisters to discover their voices and harmonies. Billie’s professional journey began as a teenager, performing jazz standards four nights a week alongside Sergio Foechi, one of Louis Armstrong’s pianists, at the renowned Marios of Brighton Jazz Club in Melbourne.
A pivotal moment came when legendary Motown arranger and conductor Gil Askey, known for his work with Diana Ross, the Jacksons, and the Temptations, joined her group for a performance. He became a mentor, sharing his wealth of musical stories and experience. Billie further honed her craft, studying classical voice with acclaimed tenor Ron Lees, and pursued sound engineering and production at the Melbourne School of Sound Engineering. By night, she was a professional singer; by day, a model. Her performances spanned television shows like “Hey Hey It’s Saturday” and “Good Morning Australia,” as well as top clubs, lounges, casinos, and cruise ship showrooms across the country.
In 1997, Billie moved to the United States, where she has spent over two decades performing on the Las Vegas Strip in venues such as Luxor, Paris, MGM Grand, Excalibur, Mirage, M Casino, Fiesta, Lake Las Vegas, Hilton, Flamingo, Planet Hollywood, First Friday Arts Festival, The Space, and many of Vegas’ premier jazz spots. She has also produced halftime shows for NBA Championship Games and other major events. Jazz, along with smooth jazz, Latin jazz, and old-school R&B, remains her first love.
Now a long-time Las Vegas resident, Billie has embraced the desert, though the beach will always have her heart. When she’s not at the ocean, you’ll find her in the studio, writing and composing music across a variety of styles.
“I love expressing myself through music, it’s the doorway to my soul and my happiest place, whether I’m on the beach or in the studio. There’s nothing like the joy of finishing a new song and bringing together different influences in my writing. Those moments make it all worthwhile.”
Billie’s latest album, created in collaboration with Spain’s renowned Toto Zara, is a true reflection of her life, influences, and love for music. Her intention is always to create songs that bring joy, evoke feeling, and touch the heart. She hopes listeners find a connection to her music and stories.
Special thanks to Toto Zara for his unwavering support and partnership on this musical journey.
